An audit issued on Tuesday claims that a contractor that New York public contracted to house thousands of migrants over the previous two years overcharged the public for unneeded services like security guards and empty hotel rooms.

According to City Comptroller Brad Lander, the audit revealed that the contractor, DocGo Inc., charged the city $1.7 million for 9,874 empty hotel rooms over the course of two months, from May to June 2023.

The audit also discovered that the city overpaid $2 million for security services and spent $6.3 million on other services for which the vendor was unable to produce sufficient evidence.

The audit concluded that the city need to attempt to recoup $11 million of the $13.8 million it paid DocGo over the two-month period.
